Together with our partner ELSA Bucharest, we put into practice the knowledge of law students in the Witness Interviewing Competition.

The event was structured in two stages – written and oral – and students had the opportunity to simulate the roles of defence and prosecution in a simulated criminal trial with a focus on a theme from the white-collar crime spectrum, both in the prosecution and trial phase (for the finalists qualified in the oral phase).

The competition centred both on the strategies chosen in drafting and disputing the merits of requests for evidence regarding the hearing of relevant persons for the given case (witnesses, injured persons, experts, defendants) and on conducting hearing simulations of injured persons and defendants.

Last but not least, the teams concluded “on the merits” of the case taking into consideration the standards for a criminal accusation, respecting also the pre-established roles (the finalist teams even had the roles from the written stage reversed). The participants showed a good knowledge of the rules of material and procedural criminal law, revealing solid instincts in the hearings of the relevant procedural participants.

Congratulations to the winners, thank you to the participants and good luck to all!
